NuPay is school accounting and fee management, built in Zimbabwe for the way schools here are actually paid. It takes a payment from the moment it lands to the moment the books balance, without a bursar re-typing any of it.

Why we built it

The money was never the problem. Knowing whose money it was, was.

A parent pays school fees by EcoCash on a Sunday night. On Monday the bursar sees a deposit with half a name and no reference. Which student is it for? Which invoice? Which of the school’s bank accounts should it have gone to? Multiply that by every family and every term, and you have the real work of a school accounts office.

Schools have never been short of ways to collect money. What they have lacked is a system that knows what to do with it once it arrives: match it to the student, apply it to the invoice, post it to the ledger, reconcile it to the bank and show the parent the new balance.

General accounting software does not know what a student, a term or a boarding fee is. School systems that take payments usually stop at a receipt. The gap between the two is filled with spreadsheets, proof-of-payment screenshots and long nights before the audit.

NuPay was built to close that gap. It is proper double-entry accounting that already understands schools, connected directly to the bank and the payment gateway, so the bookkeeping happens as the money moves.

NuPay was not adapted from somewhere else. It starts from the things a Zimbabwean school deals with every term.

  • USD and ZWG, side by side. Invoices in USD, payments accepted in either currency at the approved rate.
  • Mobile money first. EcoCash, InnBucks, O’mari, OneMoney and SmileCash, alongside Visa and Mastercard.
  • More than one bank account. SDC, tuition and other accounts, each tracked and reconciled on its own.
  • Parents abroad. Family in the diaspora can pay fees by card from wherever they are.
  • Terms, forms, boarders and day scholars. The way schools bill is already in the product.
